research

Brief

  1. A promotion package for a new film, to include a trailer, together with two of the following three options:

    • a film magazine front cover, featuring the film;
    • a poster for the film.

    We wanted to create an exciting film but we also only wanted to film the most interesting parts of the movie without giving it away to the audience; this would leave them excited to see the real film. Originally we were going to crate a music video but we found that this is quite difficult to achieve as a specific story line for the song would be hard to create. therefore we decided to stick with the ability to have complete control over the plot and storyline. With this in mind we decided to go for the genre of thriller and base it around the idea of a last man on earth struggling to survive. We also decided that the theme of a zombie apocalypse may also be fitting which goes along with out post-apocolyptic setting.

This is a screenshot from the Book Of Eli, as shown in the photo he seems to be on his own. This is a typical convention for a last man on earth based film as the world around the man seems to be in chaos.

When researching the target audience for our film, we used the ITV sales categories and the socio economic categories to help find the right point to address our audience. According to the ITV sales categories, it would be best for the AD (adults), A3 (aged between 16-34), ME (men) that would want to come and see our post-apocolyptic movie. However, it could appeal to a younger audience such as CH (children) or AD ( all adults) as it could be the kind of film they enjoy to watch but they may not have as much disposable income as A3 so it would be more of a treat when they save up their money.

After looking at the socio economic chart, it odes not look go into enough depth when looking at the niche audiences, this means that it would be difficult to pin point an exact target audience.

textual analysis of Mad Max Fury Road, Oblivion and I Am Legend;

This magazine cover sticks to the conventions of the film like the main character and the rugged wasteland look. the idea of the wasteland convention would appeal o the audience as it is an escape into a different world where they can be entertained and forget about the worries and struggles of life.

This trailer helps the audience to understand what the narrative is and if the film would appeal to them. It represents the action side of the film whilst also beginning to create a relationship between the audience and the main characters as they will want them to succeed in their adventure/journey.

After researching into these other film trailer, poster and magazine cover, i have decided to stick with the normal conventions of a sic-fi thriller. these include conventions such as; a setting in a world unlike reality, physical or mental problems that do not occur within a normal situation, disease or devastation. Some conventions we are unable to stick to as i do not have the technology to create and destroyed world or even a completely new world that a hollywood company would. this means that our setting would need to be focused around a sub-urban area that could have once been bustling with life but now is empty and abandoned. However, most aspects of a sic-fi thriller will remain the same in our trailer such as a similar narrative such as "last man on earth" or a disease that has spread and has killed many people or infected them and changed them into something else.
